In a game that was close throughout, the Cardinals pulled out a huge road win over the host Panthers.  South got off to a solid start with solid passing and took advantage of Centralia miscues to take a 15-10 lead after the first quarter.  The Panthers regrouped in the second quarter and scored inside with Blackwell and Ford to take a lead into the half 24-22.

The third quarter was played very evenly but Centralia missed out on several opportunities to stretch the lead.  After missing several inside shots, it seemed the Panthers began to rely too heavily on the 3-point shot.  While they made quite a few, it seemed like they were looking more for the trey than anything else.  After the third quarter, Centralia clung to a 36-35 lead.  In the fourth quarter and OT, South Shelby started working the ball inside to #40 and #42 and they put it in the hole.  Also, the Cardinal guards started driving in to either score or dish it off for easy buckets.  The Cardinals stretched the lead to 5 but Centralia pulled back even late in OT on a 3-pointer by Horn to tie the game.

Centralia got a steal by Cox and had a chance to score to win the game.  A missed shot gave the ball back to the Cardinals with about 10 seconds left in OT.  A tipped ball out of bounds had South inbounding the ball with 4.0 seconds remaining.  On the inbounds pass, the ball sailed out of bounds and was called a tipped pass.  The clock operator (and me too but I was at the other end of the court) didn't see the ball get tipped so the clock didn't start.  The officials had the clock set to 3.0 seconds to set the stage for #40's last second shot to win it for South Shelby, 61-59.

Coach Hann and his Centralia girls basketball team hosted the South Shelby Cardinals last night at Centralia High School.  After an even first quarter (8-8), the Panthers switched to a stifling zone defense and shut down the Cardinal offense.  At the same time, the Panthers' size advantage paid dividends.  The Panthers outscored the Cardinals 16-5 in the second quarter and took a 24-13 lead into the half.

The Panthers outscored South Shelby 15-6 in the third quarter to go into the final frame up 39-19.  With multiple lineups going on the court, Centralia still outscored the Cardinals 16-7 in the fourth quarter to win handily 55-26.

I just read one of the best sports articles that I've read in a long time.  You wouldn't normally look to the Kansas City Star to see positive articles on MU but this one is excellent!  Check it out... it's well worth your time.

On Friday the 13th, the Centralia Panthers hosted the #1 team in Class 3, the Hallsville Indians.  The Indians were previously unbeaten and had beaten Centralia by 10 in the Centralia Tournament earlier in the season.  The Lady Panthers played aggressively and hung with the Indians to pull out a huge win 38-36.  Congrats to Coach Hann, Coach Finlay, Coach Newsted, and all of the Lady Panthers!

The Centralia Panthers hosted the Hallsville Indians on Friday, January 13th.  The Panthers came out hot and took an early lead but Hallsville hung tough.  It was back and forth the whole game but Centralia pulled out the win.  Centralia seemed much more in control of the ball as compared to earlier in the season at the Centralia Tournament.  If not for numerous missed short shots, Centralia would have beaten the Indians much more handily.
